The vision of the GGDMA is not recorded anywhere but the shared aspiration expressed by its Executive, members, and staff is to keep the gold and diamond mining industry, especially the small and medium scale sector, robust.
Over the years the challenges facing the industry has changed and robustness has come to represent more than just financial success for operators and economic contribution of the industry to the country.
In a changing context of increasing environmental demands upon the industry, robustness also has come to mean “mining with the environment in mind” -‐ in a manner that also protects the economic viability of small and medium scale mining and defends the rights of miners.
This, however, is not a shared vision and approaches to how the Committee of Management’s members, staff members, and the GGDMA’s membership view the environmental dimension differ. This will be discussed in Section 4.
