GGDMA COLLABORATES WITH THE MINISTRY OF HEALTH ON MALARIA DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT WITHIN MINING CAMPS
March 6,2024.
Dear Members,
The Guyana Gold and Diamond Miners Association (GGDMA) has recently had several engagements with the Ministry of Health (MOH), MOH Vector Control Services, MOH National :Malaria Programme and Breakthrough ACTION Guyana on malaria and its effects on miners and the mining sector.
While malaria services are available to miners at most public health facilities in the interior, these facilities are usually far away from the mining camps. Recent information coming out from the Ministry shows that malaria has been affecting miners in regions # 1, 7, 8, 9 and some parts of 10.
To ensure the services are more accessible to miners, the MOH has agreed to train volunteer testers in the camps so as to have ample coverage to our miners who are vulnerable to malaria. The MOH will conduct training for volunteer testers, supply the test kits (RDTs), offer treatment, provide treatment envelopes, distribute long lasting insecticide treated nets (LLINs) and establish accountability measures with consideration to certifying these mining camps. If you are interested in having trained volunteer testers in your mining camp, you are hereby invited to furnish a list of name/s of individuals in your mining camp to betrained, the location of your mining camps so that it can be accessed and your contact information. Once received this information will be forwarded to the MOH National Malaria Programme and contact would be made with you directly on these matters.
Your early response would be appreciated. Your response can be sent to; email[email protected] or [email protected]; or WhatsApp 592-633-7111.
Sincerely,
Mr. Avalon Jagnandan
Administrator of the GGDMA.
