Mr. Ronaldo Alphonso has been elected as the new President of the Guyana Gold and Diamond Mining Association at the 39th annual meeting which was held on October 25th. He will be supported by the newly elected management team, which includes, Mr. Marcus Dabria was elected as Vice President, Mr. Azeem Baksh as Secretary, Mr. Patrick Harding returned at treasurer, Mr. Gerald Alphonso was elected as Organizing Secretary while Ms. Vishanti Balgobin, Mr. Terrence Adams, Mr. Terry Singh, and Mr. Shawn King were elected as members of the management committee.

GGDMA supports government’s call to stop unlawful gold trading

2023/10/24 (Georgetown) – The Guyana Gold and Diamond Miners Association (GGDMA) stands in full
solidarity with Government’s statement of the 23rd October 2023 regarding the eradication of the unlawful
trading of gold in our country. Earlier this year, in August 2023, the GGDMA issued a statement calling for
the complete removal of illegal buyers, sellers and illegal operators in the gold sector; for them to be dealt
with to the fullest extent of the law and completely wiped out from the mining sector of Guyana. We are
heartened at this statement as it is our hope that these public utterances are indeed followed by requisite
action by the relevant agencies to bring violators to heel.

Illegal Mining at Chinese Landing must not be Legalised

The Guyana Gold and Diamond Miners Association (GGDMA) wishes to set the record straight as it relates to the unauthorised mining that has been occurring at Chinese landing for more than 12 years. The rightful property holder has been unlawfully deprived of his right to earn a livelihood while illegality ran amuck on the lands for more than 12 years. The GMC has failed to do its job and the environmental damage and unregulated mining resulting in the current condition of Chinese landing is a direct result of this negligence/incompetence. The Caribbean Court of Justice is in fact the highest court in Guyana and final arbitrator in legal matters, yet its decisions are being skirted and loopholed. The GGDMA calls for an immediate stop to the harassment of legal miners and for a full commitment from the regulatory agencies administering over the mining sector to adhere to Guyana’s highest court. The legal property holder must be allowed to pursue his constitutional right to earn a living and not be vilified, he has legally fought long and hard for this right. The GGDMA also welcomes the current government fact-finding mission and looks forward to the illumination of the truth.

The GGDMA views the actions of the government on this matter as a watershed moment in the mining history of Guyana; if the rights of those who shout the loudest triumph over the truth, then the entire industry will develop a disrespect for the law and just practice shouting. Many other areas face a similar issue where noise makers are shouting over the facts. The GDMA is aware of the impact the actions in this matter may have on other areas bordering Amerindian lands. The Association calls for the decision of Guyana’s highest court, the Caribbean Court of Justice (CC), to be respected. Anything else would-be lawlessness.

GGDMA Concerned About Reduced Declarations And Other Issues Afflicting the Gold and Diamond Mining Sector

The Guyana Gold and Diamond Miners Association (GGDMA) has noted with concern the recent drop in gold declaration figures from the small and medium scale miners. This should be expected as the industry has been affected by several factors including the ongoing competition for labour, driven by the explosion in construction and job opportunities in the oil and gas sector. While the entire country is faced with an ongoing labour shortage, the mining sector has been especially hard hit. Workers have been opting out of the sector to work on the coastland where competitive salaries mitigate the risk of interior work. This unprecedented worker scarcity has seen the small and medium scale operators struggling to find workers as the industry bears the brunt of the labour shortage in Guyana.

(CI-Guyana) with support from the Global Environmental Facility (GEF) is collaborating to execute a project titled “GGDMA Responsible Mining Project”.
